Don’t Die In The Woods – It’ll Ruin Your Day!

Be Prepared|Suggested Reading

Of the many tips for survival you read here, probably the best of all is the traditional motto of the Boy Scouts of America, "Be Prepared!" Whenever you go down to the woods, whether for a short day trip or a two-week trek deep into the wilderness, you must go prepared. Boy Scouts of America

You take several important actions for your preparation: You test all your gear, and especially brand new equipment, in your back yard on a sunny day. You get yourself fit in all sorts of ways including trips to the gym and running up any convenient hills in your neighborhood. You keep your first aid knowledge current by attending courses regularly and you go orienteering to refine your navigation skills.

But no doubt your most important survival skill is your reading: you read everything you can get your hands on that has to do with outdoor adventures. This way you learn about particular pieces of gear that have worked well for others. You pick up all kinds of tips from people who make a living at this survival business. You even read about things that have gone wrong - sometimes seriously wrong - for others so you, hopefully, can avoid making those mistakes (you are free, of course, to make different mistakes of your own).

Included here are a number of books for you to think about. Browse through these and buy a couple that catch your eye. Maybe they are by writers you recognize, maybe they have been recommended by your friends, or maybe they just look interesting.

In any case, when you go down to the woods, don't just survive - survive in style by being prepared.
